I am an Associate Professor of Demography at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil, economist and demographer visiting the Population Studies Center for a one year (August 2016 through July 2017).  I am a core faculty member of the Center for Regional Planning and Development (Cedeplar) in Brazil, which hosts a Graduate Program in Demography and Economics. Janice Madden will be my sabbatical supervisor.  I chose Penn’s PSC based on its very active scholarly community and a long tradition of regional studies and international reputation. “Very few places in the world provide such a rich interdisciplinary environment and inviting research community. I am very excited to learn from research fellows at Penn and explore all the possibilities Penn, the PSC, and Philadelphia have to offer”.

In the last few years my work on population and environmental studies has focused on agricultural frontiers, environmental behavior in urban settings, and preparedness behavior against flood hazards. More recently I have been interested in the evolution of poverty and inequality, its regional gradients and sensitivity to cash transfer programs resulting from an unstable political scenario in Brazil and its consequences for redistributive public policy. I hope that my research over the next year can shed some light on the importance of the inclusive development agenda for fighting poverty and economic asymmetries regionally.
